Garden Tip

Garden Tip

With several weeks of summer remaining it’s important to make sure your annuals have what they need to continue looking their best. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) and fertilizing are key in keeping these plants robust and attractive for as long as possible. To keep coleus full and vibrant, remove the flowers as they start to develop. Most annuals will benefit from continued application of a light fertilizer. Liquid feeding is the quickest way to deliver the required nutrients, but granular fertilizer will work fine, too. To promote flower production (and not green, leafy growth), remember to use a fertilizer with relatively low nitrogen such as 20-20-20. You may want to consider a lighter formulation, such as 10-10-10, if you applied compost earlier in the year or have been fertilizing regularly throughout the season.
