When you think of Valentine’s Day, you might think of red roses, heart-shaped cards and chocolates. At DSBG, we find long walks on the trail, sharing a s’more around a bonfire and taking in the beauty of our natural world even more romantic. If you (or your partner) agree, here are eight outdoorsy date ideas to plan a Valentine’s Day off the beaten path.

- Take a Hike
There’s no quality time quite like enjoying the peace and serenity of nature together. Button up your matching flannels, slip on your hiking boots and hit the trails for a day of exploration and adventure. DSBG offers over eight miles of trails on our property, (no Garden admission necessary to access!) winding all the way from the Trailhead Store entrance to the shores of Lake Wylie. Bonus points if you enjoy a hike at sunset!
2. Share a Sweet Treat at The Trailhead Store
After your hike, stop by The Trailhead Store for some sweet sustenance. S’more kits and fresh baked goods give you plenty of options to reward yourself after a long hike. Fire pits even give you the chance to huddle together and roast some s’mores! Outdoor seating lets you make the most of your day and enjoy the sunshine as you spend time with that special someone.
3. Plan a Picnic
Take your trip to The Trailhead Store a step further with a romantic picnic. Pack up the essentials, like a blanket and snacks, or keep things simple by stocking up on grab-and-go lunches (and maybe a bottle of wine) once you arrive.
4. Join the Valentine’s Day Fun at Trailhead
Can’t get enough of The Trailhead Store? Join us on Saturday, February 15 for a sweet Valentine’s Day celebration! Enjoy exclusive charcuterie and 35% off wine as you enjoy a special afternoon of free music, featuring loves songs performed by JazzGroupTrio. It’s the perfect balance of nature and romantic charm.

5. Stargazing
Simple, affordable, but so impactful: set up a blanket in your backyard or public park or beach (just be sure they’re open after dark!) and gaze up at the sparkling night sky. Stargazing presents the perfect opportunity for conversation and relaxation with your favorite person.
6. Find a paved walking path
If you or your partner love spending time outside but aren’t quite ready to jump into hiking on trails, try finding a paved path to explore. DSBG’s many beautiful gardens offer accessible, easy-to-navigate paths that lead to some stunning views. Our stunning water fountains make the perfect backdrop for a cute Valentine’s Day photo opportunity.

7. Explore New Climates
This one feels like cheating because the Williamson Conservatory is technically an indoor space, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. If you do spend Valentine’s Day wandering the gardens, don’t miss out on what might be the most romantic spot on the property. Take in lush, tropical plants from every angle as you enjoy the warm climate that helps them survive and thrive. It’s no wonder that the Williamson Conservatory is one of the most popular places for couples getting married at DSBG to take their photos.
8. Volunteer Together
If you and your partner are passionate about the Earth and protecting our natural resources, consider volunteering as a way to both spend time together and give back. From garden restoration projects to caring for animals at a shelter, there are tons of opportunities around Mecklenberg and Gaston counties to find the perfect fit for your volunteer date. Get detailed volunteer opportunities at Spring Into Action, a volunteer kickoff and social on February 22 hosted in partnership between DSBG and Catawba RiverKeeper.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about candlelit dinners and crowded restaurants. If you and your partner are the adventurous types, why not switch things up with an outdoor date that’s both memorable and fun? Whether it’s hiking, stargazing or a cozy winter picnic, nature has a way of creating the perfect backdrop for connection and adventure. So, lace up those boots, grab your favorite snacks and head out into the great outdoors for a Valentine’s Day that’s as unique and spirited as your relationship. After all, love is an adventure—why not start it outside?
